How the ‘sweet troubles’ of motherhood brewed ...

How the ‘sweet troubles’ of motherhood brewed an organic tea idea
Mum-of-two Marina Persoglio is on a mission to soothe babies and save their parents from “going bonkers” by helping to give them all a good night’s sleep.
Her weapon of choice? A nice cuppa – of course.
But Nipper&Co are no ordinary teas: The seven herbal blends, including one that’s safe for babies from two weeks old, have all been inspired by Marina’s own experiences of the “sweet troubles” of parenthood – from pregnancy to colicky babies and difficulties breastfeeding.
And with biodegradable bags and packaging, they’re also kind to the environment.
“The idea behind Nipper&Co started with my experience of motherhood,” says Marina, who has two sons, Max and Adam.
“From going off coffee because it smelt so wrong during pregnancy, to difficulties with nursing – and my first child having digestive colic. I went through all these ‘sweet troubles’ of parenthood and each was an inspiration for a different blend.”
Originally from Croatia, where there’s a strong herbal tea tradition, Marina’s studies in agronomy – with MSc in Medicinal Plants gave her a unique understanding of the lifecycle of herbs from seed, so she knows where the best ones grow, and how to use them to support health.
She says: “My vision was to support mamas like myself with the help of Mother Nature. You’re not just creating a delicious cup of tea, you’re almost making magic and that requires great knowledge and love for botanicals. Each blend has a powerful botanical that is traditionally used to support health and wellbeing.”
A loving cup
Since its launch in 2018 her best-selling Organic Mum’s Milk blend has been helping new mums on their breastfeeding journey - the naturally caffeine-free blend mixes thyme, aniseed, fennel and caraway to help milk flow and regulate hormone production, while fenugreek boosts the immune system.
Another hugely popular colic rescue blend, Organic Calm Tummy, is crafted for  babies’ digestion – with aniseed and fennel to bring up those pops of wind. It’s safe from two weeks of age and, once cooled, can be given by spoon and added to formula feeds or can be drunk by breastfeeding mothers as a delicious herbal tea.
As sleep is a necessity for any parent, the Sip ‘n’ Snore blend – with linden blossom, valerian and lavender – is designed to send night-time sippers gently off to the land of nod.
“I do get a lot of ‘thank you for a good night’s sleep’ messages and it’s always nice to see them,” she says, “but there is just something special when you help a new mum who has struggled with nursing or had a colicky baby who couldn’t settle – and your tea brings them peace.”
And for those needing a little pick-me-up, the Wake Up Brew is a rich Indian Assam & Sri Lankan black tea with Yerba Mate for energy and Siberian Ginseng for immunity.
There’s also a Happy Bumps blend for Pregnant Mamas; a fruity caffeine-free Kids Cuppa, with elderberries, hibiscus, and orange peel; and Green Supreme, made with Vietnamese green tea, Yerba Mate, Siberian Ginseng, ginger and lemongrass to supercharge mind, body and soul.
Going green
Besideswanting to help mums at each stage of their journey from pregnancy to sleepless nights, Marina’s determined to make Nipper&Co a sustainable company. The packaging is almost fully recyclable, compostable and pyramid teabags are biodegradable, while the botanicals are ethically sourced and organic.
She admits she “struggled” and spent a lot of time researching to find an environmentally friendly solution she was happy with, and it does add to the cost. But she believes the food industry is moving in the right direction, with manufacturers and suppliers looking to reduce their impact on the environment.
“I only ever want to make things my kids would be proud of. Being kind to the environment and all creatures around us is at the core of Nipper&Co,” she says.
“If we want this world left in a good shape for our kids, we need to behave responsibly towards the environment and teach our children how to do the same.”
Marina is available for interviews and to write expert-led parenting and wellbeing pieces, such as:

the best herbs to help new mums and babies
how herbs help with sleepnessness
how to cope with the trials of being a new mum
setting up your own business as a mum
building a sustainable business
